About CRASIF

Our Story

Governmental entities nation-wide experienced an insurance crisis in the 1970’s.  Consequently, legislation was enacted to allow governmental entities to self-insure their liabilities.

The County Road Association Self-Insurance Fund (aka CRASIF) was formed in 1978 to manage the workers’ compensation liability of participating road commissions known as members.  It was the sixth self-insured group fund to be created in Michigan.  CRASIF began with 34 road commissions.  It currently serves 70 county road commissions with a combined employee population of roughly 3,600 employees.

The Fund is governed by a nine-person Board of Trustees comprised of road commission administrative staff and commissioners.  The Board hires an administrator to be the chief operating officer.

CRASIF operates independently from the County Road Association of Michigan.
